Ponneri is a town in Tiruvallur district, on the low coastal plain north of Chennai. The Arani river passes close by on its way to the sea, and the land around it is flat and well watered, divided into paddy fields, irrigation tanks and small settlements. Ponneri is a station on the suburban railway running north from Chennai toward Gummidipoondi, and that line crosses the map as a steady straight stroke.
