Pontefract is a market town in West Yorkshire, east of Wakefield. Its centre is a tight knot of older streets around the market place, with lanes running out to the castle ruins on a rise to the northeast. Around this core, twentieth-century housing estates spread outward in looser curves, and the town meets neighbouring Castleford and Knottingley across fields and rail lines.
Pontefract Castle is the town's best-known landmark. It was one of the most important fortresses in the north of England, and it is where Richard II is believed to have died in 1400.
