Praya is the main town of Central Lombok, on the Indonesian island east of Bali. From above it looks like a compact core of streets set in a wide agricultural landscape, with main roads crossing at the centre and smaller lanes filling the blocks between them. Around the edges, the pattern breaks into rice paddies and irrigation channels.
The town has gained importance since Lombok International Airport opened a short distance to the south, making Praya a gateway for visitors heading to the island's southern beaches. Even so, the town itself remains primarily a local administrative and market centre, with daily life organised around government offices, schools and shops.
