Puertollano lies in the south of Ciudad Real province, in a valley bordered by low hills. Unlike the wide, open towns elsewhere in La Mancha, its shape is constrained: the built area stretches along the valley floor, and the streets climb only a short way up the slopes before giving way to scrub and rock.
The town grew with coal mining in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and later with a large refinery and petrochemical complex. These industrial sites appear on the map as broad areas of sparse, geometric lines at the edge of town, very different in texture from the dense residential grid at the centre.
Puertollano also sits on the high-speed rail line between Madrid and Seville, and the railway draws a clean, gentle curve across the plan.
