Pyay, historically known as Prome, lies on the east bank of the Irrawaddy in Bago Region, north-west of Yangon. On a map the broad channel fills the western edge, with sandbanks and a far shore that rises toward the hills of the Rakhine Yoma. The town stretches along the water in a band of streets running parallel to the bank, with roads heading inland to the east.
South-east of town are the remains of Sri Ksetra, one of the Pyu Ancient Cities that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2014. Its brick walls and scattered stupas cover a much larger area than the modern town. Closer in, the gilded Shwesandaw Pagoda crowns a low hill. The railway line from Yangon ends in Pyay, which makes it a natural terminus on the map.
A Pyay map poster shows how a river settlement grew along the Irrawaddy, with the long waterfront, the streets behind it and the roads leading inland toward the old Pyu capital. In monochrome the river becomes a wide pale field beside the dense town. The result is a calm, spacious composition that suits anyone who has travelled this stretch of central Myanmar.
The great river forms the town's western boundary. Its broad channel and shifting sandbanks are drawn as open space beside the tight street pattern along the east bank.
South-east of the centre lies the ancient Pyu city of Sri Ksetra. This World Heritage site is far older than the modern town and covers a much larger area.
The Shwesandaw Pagoda stands on a rise near the centre of town. On the map, streets and approaches gather around it.

Ko e ha Pyay
Pyay matters to families with roots in the Irrawaddy valley, to travellers who stopped here between Yangon and Bagan, and to anyone drawn to Myanmar's early cities. A clean street map keeps the river and the town together in one image.
