Radolfzell lies on the Untersee, the western part of Lake Constance, where the shore bends around a sheltered bay known as the Zeller See. The old town sits right on the water, with the railway line running along the lake front, and newer districts spread up the gentle slopes behind it.
Just east of the centre, the long, narrow Mettnau peninsula stretches into the lake, much of it a nature reserve with reed beds and a spa park at its base. The minster of Our Lady rises over the old town, and across the water lies the Höri peninsula, a landscape associated with painters and writers of the twentieth century.
