Ko e mape
Rajaori, also written Rajouri, lies in the southern foothills of the Pir Panjal range in Jammu and Kashmir. The town grew along the valley of the Manawar Tawi, and on a map its streets follow the river closely, squeezed between water and rising ground. Contour lines crowd around it on every side, so the built-up area appears as a winding band rather than a round town.
The place is old: historical sources refer to it as Rajapuri, the seat of a small hill kingdom, and the area later sat on routes between the plains of Punjab and the Kashmir Valley. Today it is the headquarters of Rajouri district, and roads heading north towards the mountains still shape the way the town connects to the wider region.
A Rajaori map poster captures the tension between river valley and hills: a dense core along the water, roads curving outward, and ridges folding one behind another. The pattern is irregular and organic, which gives a monochrome print a great deal of texture without needing any colour to explain it.
The river runs through the length of the town and sets its orientation. On the map it is the central line that every neighbourhood leans towards.
Rajaori sits where the plains give way to the Pir Panjal. Ridges and slopes surround the town, pushing streets into curves and terraces instead of straight blocks.
Routes leave the town northwards towards the Pir Panjal passes, tracing long winding lines that show how settlements in this region connect through their valleys.
