Ko e mape
Rājbirāj is the headquarters of Saptari District in Nepal's Madhesh Province, on the flat Terai plain a short distance from the border with India. It is often described as one of the first planned towns in Nepal, laid out with a regular grid of streets. On a map that intention is still visible, with straight roads and rectangular blocks standing out against the surrounding farmland.
The countryside around the town is almost perfectly level, crossed by irrigation channels, village tracks and the long, straight roads typical of the Terai. Paddy fields and ponds form a quiet patchwork beyond the last houses. To the west, the broad Koshi River system dominates the wider region, its braided channels a reminder of the power of Himalayan water on the plains.
The Rajdevi Temple is among the town's best-known sites and a focus for local festivals. A Rājbirāj map poster balances that cultural centre with the logic of the plan itself: an ordered grid of streets set down on open, fertile land. For anyone from Saptari, it is an instantly recognisable shape and a proud piece of Nepal's urban history.

Flat, fertile fields surround the town, divided by channels, tracks and ponds that create a soft, even texture framing the urban grid.
The temple is one of the town's most important religious sites, drawing worshippers from across the district and anchoring the cultural life of the centre.

Ko e ha Rājbirāj
Rājbirāj is a point of pride as a planned town, and its grid holds up beautifully as a graphic image. A print of its streets suits a family home in Saptari as much as an apartment in Kathmandu or further away.
