Ras Gharib is on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez, in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate. On a map, the town is a narrow strip between the water and the Eastern Desert. The coastal highway runs parallel to the shoreline, and the streets are laid out in a compact grid, with desert stretching away to the west.
The town grew around oil. Fields along this stretch of the Gulf of Suez have been producing for decades, and pipelines, storage tanks and industrial compounds sit around the settlement. More recently, the windy coast between Ras Gharib and the areas further south has become a centre for large wind farms, which appear as long rows across the desert.
The landscape has very few natural curves apart from the gently arching coastline and the dry wadis descending from the hills. A Ras Gharib map poster shows a town defined by straight lines: the shore, the highway, the street grid and the geometric infrastructure of the energy industry. The result is stark, graphic and unusual.
The coastline runs almost straight along the eastern side of the town and gives the map a strong, clean edge with open water beyond.
Tanks, pipelines and industrial sites around the town reflect decades of oil production along this part of the Gulf and appear as distinct geometric blocks.
Dry channels run down from the hills toward the coast and draw faint branching lines across the otherwise empty desert.

Ko e ha Ras Gharib
Many people have lived in Ras Gharib for work, on rotations in the oil fields or on long assignments. A map of the town is a record of those years, and its stark geometry holds up well on a wall.
