Rastede lies in the Ammerland district of Lower Saxony, just north of Oldenburg. From above, the town is a loose, leafy place. Its residential streets curve among gardens and woods, and a large park fills a noticeable part of the centre.
That park belongs to Rastede Palace, once the summer residence of the grand dukes of Oldenburg. Its landscape grounds, with long paths, trees and water, show on the map as a green void edged by streets. Around it the town spreads over flat north German land, with fields and patches of woodland in between.
