Retalhuleu is the capital of the department of the same name, in the warm Pacific lowlands of south-western Guatemala. The land here slopes gently from the volcanic highlands toward the ocean, and the town stands among farmland and plantations on this coastal plain.
From above, Retalhuleu shows a classic Spanish colonial layout: a regular grid of streets around a central plaza with its church and public buildings.
