Rho lies northwest of Milan, on the flat land of the Po plain that stretches toward the Alps. Its historic centre is compact, with narrow streets around the main church, while newer districts spread outward in a denser, more modern pattern. The Olona river passes through, adding a thin line of water to the urban fabric.
The town is known as the home of Fiera Milano, one of Europe's largest exhibition centres, built on the boundary with Pero. Next to it lies the site of Expo 2015. Rho is also known for its Sanctuary of the Madonna Addolorata, a pilgrimage church with a long local tradition.
