Ko e mape
Rio Grande occupies a flat, sandy peninsula at the southern end of Brazil. Here the huge Lagoa dos Patos drains into the Atlantic through a single channel. From above, the city is mostly surrounded by water. Its old centre faces the channel to the north, and docks, shipyards and container terminals line the shore on either side.
The oldest city in Rio Grande do Sul, founded in 1737, grew up around this channel. It remains the state's main seaport. Two long stone breakwaters, the Molhes da Barra, stretch far out into the ocean to keep the channel open, and they are among the most distinctive lines on any map of the Brazilian coast.
A Rio Grande map poster also covers the resort district of Cassino to the south. Its beach runs in an almost unbroken line for a very long way down the coast toward Uruguay. Between town and sea, the map fills with lagoons, marsh channels and sandbanks, so the land looks unfinished, still being shaped by wind and water.
Two parallel stone breakwaters extend from the sandbar out into the Atlantic, guarding the entrance to the Lagoa dos Patos. They form two thin, straight lines against open water.
South of the city, the Cassino shoreline runs in one long, smooth curve. It is often listed among the longest continuous beaches in the world.
The historic centre and port sit on a low peninsula bordered by channels and inlets, giving the city a jagged waterfront full of piers and docks.

Ko e ha Rio Grande
Rio Grande is a port city in the true sense: its shape comes from the water around it. For anyone who grew up near the molhes, studied at the local university or spent summers at Cassino, this map holds the whole coast in one view, from harbour cranes to open beach.
