Ripon, in North Yorkshire, is one of the smallest cities in England, and its map shows a compact centre shaped by water. The rivers Ure, Skell and Laver meet near the city, and the Ripon Canal reaches toward the southern edge of town, linking it with the Ure.
The old streets lead into a large market square with its tall obelisk, and the cathedral stands a short walk to the east. Its crypt dates back to the seventh century and the time of St Wilfrid.
