Robben Island lies in Table Bay, several kilometres off the Cape Town shore. On a map it is a small, low oval with a smooth outline, and its highest ground barely rises above the sea. Inside, a sparse network of roads connects the harbour, a small village, the former prison buildings, a quarry and a lighthouse.
For centuries the island was a place of banishment. At different times it served as a prison, a leper colony and a military base. It is best known as the prison where Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years in prison, alongside many other political prisoners of the apartheid era. Visitors now take a ferry from the V&A Waterfront and land at Murray's Bay harbour.
In 1999 the island became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is now run as a museum. The waters around it are cold and rocky, and old shipwrecks lie along its coast. A Robben Island map poster sets the small island against the wide water of the bay, a restrained image for a place with a heavy history.

Prisoners, Mandela among them, were forced to dig limestone in a quarry on the island. On the map it appears as a small open patch inland, easy to miss and heavy with meaning.
The lighthouse stands on the island's highest point, which is only a modest rise. It has guided ships in Table Bay since the nineteenth century.

Ko e ha Robben Island
People hang this map after visiting the museum, while studying South African history, or because they admire Mandela and the long struggle against apartheid. It is a simple, sober image that invites reflection rather than decoration.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a date that matters to you. Choose from five styles. Classic black & white and Noir suit its sober tone. The HD download is $9, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
