Rochdale lies in the north of Greater Manchester, where the town gives way to the Pennine moors. The River Roch runs through the centre, and the Rochdale Canal curves past on its way over the hills to Yorkshire. Around them, rows of terraced housing, former mill sites and ring roads make up a dense, varied plan that feels unmistakably northern English.
The town has a firm place in social history. In 1844 the Rochdale Pioneers opened their shop on Toad Lane, and it became the model for the modern co-operative movement. A short walk away stands the Victorian Gothic town hall, one of the finest in the country. In the centre, a stretch of the Roch was uncovered again after decades under the streets.
