Rottenburg am Neckar lies in a narrow stretch of the Neckar valley, upstream from Tübingen. The river runs through the middle of town. The historic centre sits mainly on one bank and the older Ehingen quarter on the other, with bridges linking them. On a map, the valley walls hold the streets in a long, narrow band that follows the river.
The town has been the seat of the Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart since the nineteenth century, and St. Martin's Cathedral stands at the heart of the old centre. Its history reaches back much further. In Roman times it was the settlement of Sumelocenna, and archaeological remains from that period have been found beneath the modern town.
