Rottweil sits on high ground above the upper Neckar, and the map makes its medieval planning easy to read. The town traces its origins to the Roman settlement of Arae Flaviae and is usually described as the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg. It also gave its name to the Rottweiler dog breed.
