Rumphi is the administrative centre of Rumphi District in Malawi's Northern Region. The town sits in rolling country near the South Rukuru River, and on a map it shows up as a compact grid of streets around the main road and market, with farmland and scattered homesteads spreading out into the hills beyond.
Rumphi is known as the gateway to Nyika National Park, the high montane grassland plateau to the north, and to Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve to the west. Travellers heading for either usually pass through town, and the roads leaving Rumphi toward the plateau are some of the most recognisable lines on the map.
A Rumphi map poster keeps things simple and clear. The river curves through the frame, the town's streets gather into a small, orderly centre, and the roads reach outward toward the park and neighbouring districts. In monochrome, the map reads almost like a diagram of how the town connects to the land around it.
The river passes close to town and adds a long, winding line to the map, softening the straighter roads and giving the composition a natural edge.
The route north toward Nyika National Park leaves town and climbs into the hills, one of the defining lines for anyone who has travelled this way.
The commercial core around the main road and market forms the densest part of the map, a small grid that stands out against the open countryside.
