Ko e mape
Runcorn lies on the south bank of the River Mersey in Cheshire, facing Widnes across the Runcorn Gap, the point where the estuary narrows sharply. From above the riverfront is busy with lines: the Manchester Ship Canal follows the south shore, the Bridgewater Canal ends in the old town, and three bridges cross the water within a short distance.
The old town near the river keeps a tighter street pattern, while much of Runcorn was developed as a new town from the 1960s. Its planners built a dedicated busway, a loop that links the housing estates and the central shopping area. The ruins of Norton Priory, a medieval abbey site, are on the town's eastern side.
A Runcorn map poster brings together river, canals, bridges and new-town planning in one frame. The Silver Jubilee Bridge, the railway bridge and the Mersey Gateway cross the Gap in parallel, and the curving estates and busway loop give the southern part of the map its own distinct pattern.
The railway bridge, the arched Silver Jubilee Bridge and the cable-stayed Mersey Gateway, opened in 2017, all span the Mersey near Runcorn Gap.
The Manchester Ship Canal runs along the estuary edge, while the Bridgewater Canal cuts inland through the town, both drawn as long, clear lines.
A dedicated bus road loops through the planned estates, a rare feature that shows up on the map as a continuous ring around the town.
