Saaremaa is Estonia's largest island, off the country's west coast in the Baltic Sea. It is low and wide, with a coastline broken into bays, small peninsulas and scattered islets. In the south, the Sõrve peninsula narrows into a long finger of land pointing toward Latvia. In the east, a causeway links Saaremaa to neighbouring Muhu, and ferries connect Muhu to the mainland.
Kuressaare, the island's only town, sits on the south coast. At its heart is a well-preserved medieval episcopal castle with a square plan, surrounded by moats and bastions that show clearly from above.
