Saint-Étienne fills a narrow valley in the eastern Massif Central, southwest of Lyon. The city is long rather than round. A main north–south axis, the Grand'Rue, runs almost its whole length, and a tram line has run along it since the nineteenth century. On both sides, streets climb the slopes, and the grid fades into curving roads on the hills.
The city grew on coal, arms making and cycles. Manufrance, once one of France's best-known mail-order manufacturers, was based here, and the former coal mine is now a museum. Some spoil heaps from the mining era still rise at the city's edge. Today Saint-Étienne is a UNESCO City of Design, and its football club, AS Saint-Étienne, plays in green.
A Saint-Étienne map poster captures a stretched, linear city. Dense blocks line the main axis in the centre, and working-class districts spread up the valley walls. The river Furan is largely covered, so the valley is read through the street pattern rather than open water. It is a strong industrial composition, with a clear direction and a lot of texture.
A long straight avenue runs north–south through the valley, tracing the tram route and organising the city along its spine.
On both sides of the centre, streets climb the valley walls, so the grid turns into curves and switchbacks as the ground rises.
Around the edges, former industrial sites and spoil heaps leave large open or irregular areas that recall the city's coal-mining past.
