Saint Helier spreads along the south coast of Jersey, at the eastern end of the wide sweep of St Aubin's Bay. On a map the town is a dense, irregular knot of streets behind the harbour, with lanes that follow old routes rather than a planned grid. Beyond the centre, roads fan out northward into the island's valleys and the quieter residential areas beyond.
The shoreline shows several layers. Harbour basins and marinas step out into the sea, and much of the waterfront stands on reclaimed land. Offshore, Elizabeth Castle occupies a rocky islet that you can reach on foot at low tide. Above the town, the angular outline of Fort Regent crowns a hill and is one of the most recognisable forms on the sheet.
Jersey is a Crown Dependency with its own parliament, the States Assembly, which meets in Saint Helier. Its tides are among the largest in the world and expose wide sands twice a day. A Saint Helier map poster shows the town at high water: harbour arms, a castle island and a close web of streets climbing inland from the bay.

A series of basins, piers and breakwaters along the southern edge of town. Together they form an angular waterfront that contrasts with the smooth curve of the bay.
A nineteenth-century fortification on the hill directly above the town centre. Its sharp bastioned outline stands out clearly among the surrounding residential streets and gardens.

Ko e ha Saint Helier
Islanders, people who grew up in Jersey and those who have moved away often hang Saint Helier as a piece of home. The bay, the castle and the harbour give the composition a natural focal point, and the fine street pattern rewards a closer look.
