Salgótarján is the seat of Nógrád county in northern Hungary, close to the Slovak border. The town developed along a narrow valley, and its map shows that clearly: the main streets run lengthwise through the valley floor, and side streets climb the slopes on either side before the hills take over.
Its growth came from coal mining and steelmaking, and many districts took shape around these industries. The town centre was substantially rebuilt in the second half of the twentieth century, and its modernist blocks are laid out differently from the older, smaller streets around them.
