Samara lies on the eastern bank of the Volga, at the point where the Samara River joins it and where the Volga makes its large eastward loop known as the Samara Bend. From above, the city extends many kilometres along the river. Its long embankment borders the historic centre, and the forested Zhiguli hills rise on the opposite bank.
The historic centre sits in the angle between the Volga and the Samara River. Its streets form a fairly regular nineteenth-century grid of merchant houses and public buildings, running inland from the river. A Samara map poster shows how that grid gives way to larger Soviet-era districts, which follow the river north-east for a considerable distance.
From 1935 to 1991 the city was called Kuibyshev. During the Second World War it served as the Soviet Union's reserve capital, and a deep bunker built for Stalin can still be visited under a building in the centre. Samara is also a centre of the aerospace industry, where Soyuz launch vehicles have been built for decades.

The Samara River joins the Volga at the southern end of the old town. The angle between the two rivers is where the city began.
The Zhiguli hills and the Samara Bend lie on the opposite bank. Their forested, undeveloped land contrasts with the dense streets on the eastern side.
