Sampit is the main town of East Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. It lies on the banks of the Mentaya River, which flows south to the Java Sea, and the town has grown in a long band along the water. Streets run parallel and perpendicular to the river, and beyond the built-up area the land opens into lowland forest, swamp and plantations.
The river has always been central to life in Sampit. The town developed as a port for timber from the interior, and today palm oil and other commodities pass through its harbour. Small boats, jetties and riverside houses line the waterfront, and roads lead inland toward Palangka Raya, the provincial capital, and other towns in the region.
A Sampit map poster is shaped by the broad curve of the Mentaya, which runs through the frame as its largest single element. Along the river, the town's streets form a compact pattern, and the roads reaching into the flat interior give the composition a sense of distance and open land.
The wide river passes along the town. Its broad channel gives the map a strong natural line and recalls Sampit's role as a port.
The densest streets follow the riverbank, where the port, markets and older neighbourhoods are concentrated. Together they form a band of urban detail beside the water.
Main roads leave Sampit toward the interior and Palangka Raya. They run as long, straight lines across the flat, lightly settled lowlands of Central Kalimantan.
