San Antonio Tecómitl is one of the towns of Milpa Alta, the most rural of Mexico City's boroughs, in the far southeast of the capital. It feels very different from the city centre. On a map, the town has a traditional core of blocks around its church and plaza. Streets stretch out along the lower slopes of the volcanic hills that fill this part of the valley.
Milpa Alta has kept its pueblo character, with farmland, family plots and wooded slopes surrounding the settlements. The borough is known for growing nopal cactus, and fields and terraces cover much of the land around towns like Tecómitl. Roads link it to the neighbouring pueblos and down to the more urban areas of Tláhuac and Xochimilco.
A San Antonio Tecómitl map poster shows a Mexico City place that few people outside the capital know. The grid of the old centre sits among the looser streets of the slopes, and the edge of the built-up area meets the fields. It is a distinctive print for anyone with family ties to Milpa Alta.
The traditional centre is arranged around the church and plaza, as in most Mexican pueblos. It forms the densest, most regular block on the poster.
The land rises toward the volcanic hills of southern Mexico City. Streets on the upper side follow the slope in longer, curving lines.
Fields and nopal plots surround the town. On the map, the streets end where the farmland begins, giving the town a clear outline.
