Sanchuan is a town in Yongsheng County, in the Lijiang area of northwestern Yunnan province. It lies in a flat-floored basin enclosed by mountains. On the map, the settlement and its fields fill the valley bottom, and the surrounding slopes are marked only by winding roads and scattered villages.
The contrast between flat and steep defines the landscape. On the basin floor, farmland is divided into neat plots and crossed by irrigation channels, with the town's streets gathered in a compact cluster. Around the edges, roads start to climb and twist as they follow the terrain into the hills.
