Sangarédi lies in the Boké Region of western Guinea, on a landscape of flat-topped plateaus and forested valleys. It is a mining town. The surrounding hills contain some of the world's largest bauxite deposits, the ore used to make aluminium, and the town grew around their extraction by the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée.
From above, the settlement combines older, informal neighbourhoods with more regular areas built for the mining operations. The most striking features lie outside the town: broad open pits and haul roads on the plateaus, and a railway line that carries ore west to the coastal port of Kamsar for export.
A Sangarédi map poster depicts a place defined by industry and terrain together. The line of the railway, the roads leading out to the mines and the natural shape of the valleys give the map a strong, unusual structure, quite different from a historic town that grew around a market or a river crossing.
The flat-topped hills around the town hold the bauxite deposits. On the map, the mining areas and their access roads form broad, distinctive shapes on the landscape.
A railway links Sangarédi to the port of Kamsar on the Atlantic coast. Its long line leaves the town and gives the composition a clear direction.
Irregular neighbourhoods sit alongside more planned areas built for the mining workforce. The contrast between them is easy to read in a clean black-and-white style.
