Sanyōonoda lies on the southern coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. The city was formed in 2005 by the merger of Onoda and the town of Sanyō, and its map still shows two main centres linked by roads and rail along the coast. Industrial land and port areas meet the shore, while residential streets and farmland spread inland toward low hills.
Onoda has long been associated with industry, especially cement production, which began here in the late nineteenth century. The coastline also includes reclaimed land, tidal flats and sandy beaches, giving the city a varied edge where the land meets the sea.
A Sanyōonoda map poster brings these pieces into one frame: the coastline with its straight industrial quays and natural bays, the rivers flowing down to the sea, the rail line along the coast, and the neighbourhoods between them. The balance between land and sea is what makes the design distinctive.
The southern edge of the map is formed by the sea, with a mix of straight reclaimed shores, industrial docks and softer beaches. It gives the poster a strong, varied border.
The former Onoda and Sanyō areas each keep their own cluster of streets. On the map they appear as separate but connected towns, joined by roads and the railway.
Small rivers run down from the hills through the city to the coast. Their curving lines break up the street pattern and connect the inland districts with the shore.

People who grew up in Onoda or Sanyō, or who studied or worked here, often want a map that shows the whole city along the coast. The meeting of industry, beaches and farmland makes a clear and interesting composition.
