São Simão lies in southwestern Goiás, on the Paranaíba River at the border with Minas Gerais. Its map is defined by water. A large hydroelectric dam on the Paranaíba created a broad reservoir, and its long, branching arms dominate the land around the town. The streets themselves form a tidy grid set back from the shore.
The town is also known as a river port on the Paranaíba–Tietê–Paraná waterway, where grain from the surrounding farmland is loaded onto barges heading south. That gives the waterfront a working character, with terminals and access roads adding straight, practical lines beside the curving shoreline.
