Saquarema lies on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, east of the capital, in the Região dos Lagos. The town is defined by water: a long sandbar with Atlantic surf on one side and the Saquarema Lagoon on the other, with the town spread along and behind it.
From above, the map is a set of layered bands: open ocean, a thin line of beach, beachfront streets, the irregular shoreline of the lagoon and the green hills behind. At the centre, a small rocky headland carries the church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, overlooking the beach and the lagoon channel.
