Sarno lies on the inland edge of the plain that stretches towards Vesuvius and Pompeii, directly beneath the steep slopes of the mountains to the northeast. The town gives its name to the Sarno river, whose springs rise nearby, and the map shows water channels running out from the foot of the hills across flat, cultivated land.
The historic centre is compact, with narrow streets packed against the base of the slope. Newer quarters and roads extend into the plain, where the pattern becomes more regular and fields fill the gaps between built-up areas.
