Scranton follows the Lackawanna River through a valley in northeastern Pennsylvania. From above, the city is long and narrow. Its street grids shift direction from one neighbourhood to the next, following the valley floor, and wooded ridges rise to the east and west.
The city grew on anthracite coal and iron. It was one of the first American cities to run electric streetcars and adopted the name The Electric City. Rail yards along the river are now home to Steamtown National Historic Site, and the downtown grid gathers around Courthouse Square.
