Ségbana is a town in the Alibori department in the far north-east of Benin, close to the border with Nigeria. It is the seat of a commune of the same name. The surrounding country is savanna and farmland, and much of the local economy depends on agriculture. The area is also an important part of northern Benin's cotton-growing belt.
On a map, Ségbana is a compact settlement where roads converge. There is a small central area of streets, with compounds and plots spreading out from it in a loose, organic pattern. Beyond the town the lines thin out into tracks across open land. The map gives a clear sense of how far apart settlements are in this part of the country.
A Ségbana map poster is a personal record rather than a tourist souvenir. It suits someone who comes from the commune, has family there or spent time in northern Benin. Black and white keeps it simple: a meeting point of roads, a modest core of streets and a great deal of open savanna around it.
Main routes meet at the town, and on the poster they form the lines that everything else is organised around, stretching out towards the edges of the frame.
Instead of a strict grid, the streets and plots spread out loosely from the centre, a shape typical of market towns in the Sahel and savanna.
Sparse lines beyond the built-up area reflect the farmland and savanna of Alibori, leaving space that makes the small town stand out clearly.
