Semporna lies on the southeast coast of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, facing the Celebes Sea. From above, the town occupies a small peninsula, with streets on land and clusters of houses built out over the shallow water on stilts. Jetties and walkways extend into the sea, making the line between land and water unusually complex.
Offshore, the map is dotted with islands and coral reefs, some of them part of Tun Sakaran Marine Park. The town itself is compact, with a small grid of streets near the waterfront and roads leading inland through plantations and farmland. The sea surrounds the settlement on several sides.
