Where two rivers meet
The small Nara winds through the centre and joins the wide Oka to the south. The two rivers differ greatly in scale, and between them they give the poster its structure.

Serpukhov stands about a hundred kilometres south of Moscow, near the point where the Nara flows into the Oka. The Nara divides the town in two, drawing a winding line through the middle of the map, while the broad Oka runs along the southern side. Streets climb the slopes on either side of the valley, so the grid bends and breaks around the terrain.
The town was first recorded in the fourteenth century and for centuries guarded the southern approaches to Moscow. Its kremlin stood on Cathedral Hill above the Nara, where the Trinity Cathedral still stands. Two historic monasteries, Vysotsky and Vladychny, remain major landmarks. Nearby, the Prioksko-Terrasny reserve is known for its European bison breeding programme.
A Serpukhov map poster traces the two rivers, the old hill and the streets that grew out from it, with later housing districts filling the higher ground. The drawing shows both the curves of a river town and the denser blocks of an industrial city. In black and white, the two sit together without competing.
The small Nara winds through the centre and joins the wide Oka to the south. The two rivers differ greatly in scale, and between them they give the poster its structure.
The site of the old kremlin rises above the Nara. The streets of the historic centre are arranged around it, reflecting the town's origins as a fortress on the frontier.
The Vysotsky and Vladychny monasteries appear as distinct walled blocks within the street pattern. They are among the oldest fixed points on the map of the town.
