Ko e mape
Shikokuchūō lies in the far east of Ehime Prefecture, facing the Hiuchi Sea, part of the Seto Inland Sea. The city was formed in 2004 from a merger of several towns, including Kawanoe and Iyomishima. On a map it appears as a thin coastal strip, with streets and factories packed between the shoreline and the steep ridges of the Shikoku Mountains.
The city is known as one of Japan's leading paper-making centres, and paper mills and related industry line much of the waterfront. Its name means centre of Shikoku, and it lives up to it in one way: several of the island's expressways meet here, making it a junction for routes to Matsuyama, Takamatsu, Kōchi and Tokushima.
A Shikokuchūō map poster shows a city defined by its setting. Dense streets and harbour works hug the coast, expressways weave through the narrow plain, and the mountains rise so quickly behind that the built-up area ends abruptly. The long, stretched shape makes a distinctive composition that reads clearly even at small sizes.
The city runs along the Inland Sea shoreline, with reclaimed land, harbours and industrial piers giving the coast a detailed, angular outline.
Major expressways connecting the four prefectures of Shikoku converge here, their curves and interchanges standing out against the compact streets.
Steep forested slopes rise immediately behind the coastal plain, so the street network stops sharply, leaving the southern part of the map almost empty.
