Shumerlya lies in the south of the Chuvash Republic, in a heavily forested area not far from the Sura River. The town grew in the twentieth century around a railway and the timber industry, and its map reflects that practical beginning. Streets are laid out in fairly regular blocks, with the railway running through as a clear, straight line and industrial areas next to it.
Forest surrounds the town on most sides, so on a map the built-up area appears as a distinct island of streets in a large, quiet green expanse. Roads leave in several directions through the woods, linking Shumerlya with neighbouring towns and villages.
