Ko e mape
Sinch’ŏn-ŭp is the seat of Sinch’ŏn County in South Hwanghae, in the western lowlands of North Korea. The surrounding country is one of the main agricultural regions of the country, with rice paddies, irrigation channels and low hills. On a map the town appears as a modest cluster of streets, with fields pressing closely on all sides.
Outside Korea, Sinch’ŏn is best known for a museum dedicated to the killing of civilians in the area during the Korean War in late 1950, events whose details and responsibility are still debated by historians. Mapping data for North Korea is sparser than for many countries, and the print shows the town as it appears in open map sources.
A Sinch’ŏn-ŭp map poster is a quiet, simple composition: a small grid of streets, roads leading out toward neighbouring towns and the fine lines of the surrounding agricultural landscape. It suits those with family roots in the region, or anyone interested in the geography of a country rarely seen in detail.
The main streets form a small, fairly regular cluster at the heart of the map, clearly set apart from the open fields around it.
Flat farmland surrounds the town, crossed by irrigation channels and field paths that give the outer parts of the print a fine texture.
Routes lead out from the town toward other county towns of the region, drawing long lines across the level landscape.
