Sinnai lies a short distance northeast of Cagliari, at the point where the flat farmland around the capital meets rising, rugged hills. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets. Roads fan out toward Cagliari and toward neighbouring villages, and to the east the density drops quickly into open terrain.
East of the town, the land climbs into the Sette Fratelli massif. It is a wide stretch of forest and granite ridges with few roads and almost no buildings. The municipal territory is unusually large and reaches past these uplands to the sea. It takes in a section of the southeast Sardinian coast with small bays and headlands.
