Sioux City sits on the east bank of the Missouri River where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet. From above, the wide river curves along the city's southwestern edge, the Big Sioux joins it from the north, and the smaller Floyd River cuts a valley through the middle. The street grid runs up from the flats and gives way to the irregular ridges of the Loess Hills.
The Lewis and Clark expedition passed this stretch of river in 1804, and Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the party to die on the journey, is buried on a bluff above the Missouri. A tall stone obelisk marks the spot today. Later the city grew as a river port, a railroad hub and a livestock and meatpacking centre, and its industrial flats still line the water.
A Sioux City map poster shows these layers clearly: the orderly downtown blocks, the looser suburban streets pushed into the hills, Interstate 29 tracing the riverbank, and bridges reaching across to South Sioux City in Nebraska. Rivers, rail lines and ridges set the city's edges, so the drawing reads as much like a river landscape as a street plan.
The Missouri, the Big Sioux and the Floyd all converge near the city, giving the map a strong set of flowing lines that frame the downtown grid on the south and west.
To the north and east, the regular streets break up into curving roads that follow the folds of the Loess Hills, a band of wind-deposited bluffs rising above the Missouri valley.
Road bridges link Sioux City with South Sioux City in Nebraska, and their straight spans across the broad river become clear, simple marks on the printed poster.

Ko e ha Sioux City
For people who grew up in Siouxland or crossed its bridges every day, this map holds the river, the bluffs and the home streets in one frame. It suits a first apartment, a family home, or a gift for someone who has moved away from the tri-state area.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a neighbourhood or a year, and the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, depending on whether the room calls for sharp contrast or a softer, warmer tone.
