Siracusa is built around water. Its historic core, the small island of Ortigia, sits at the mouth of the Great Harbour and is joined to the mainland by short bridges. Inside its sea walls is a dense tangle of medieval lanes. To the north and west the modern city spreads across the mainland in broader grids, and the curving harbour shore frames the whole composition on Sicily's Ionian coast.
Founded by Greek settlers from Corinth in the eighth century BC, Syracuse became one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Mediterranean and was the birthplace of Archimedes. The Neapolis archaeological park holds its Greek theatre and the cave known as the Ear of Dionysius, and the cathedral on Ortigia incorporates the columns of a Greek temple of Athena. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Siracusa map poster captures a plan shaped over nearly three thousand years: the knot of Ortigia's streets, the bridges across the narrow channel, the wide arc of the harbour and the more open avenues of the modern city. In monochrome, the coastline becomes a strong outline and the island's lanes read like fine engraving.
The historic centre fills a small island at the harbour entrance, with narrow medieval lanes, piazzas and sea walls packed tightly inside a clear, compact outline.
The broad, sheltered Porto Grande curves west of Ortigia. Ancient naval battles were fought in this deep bay, and today it gives the map its dominant open shape.
On the mainland, the archaeological park with the Greek theatre and old quarries forms a large open space among the streets, a direct trace of the ancient city.
