Şırnak lies in the rugged mountains of southeastern Turkey, not far from the borders with Iraq and Syria. The town is built on sloping ground, and its map shows this plainly: streets follow the contours in long bending rows, switchbacks climb between neighbourhoods, and the built-up area is broken by ravines and ridges that no grid could cross.
Few places in the region are defined so completely by terrain. Roads leading out of town twist down into the valleys before reaching broader routes below, and the surrounding land is steep and sparsely settled.
