Sirūr, often written Shirur, is a town in Pune district, Maharashtra, on the road between Pune and Ahmednagar. It lies on the banks of the Ghod River, which crosses the Deccan plateau on its way to join the Bhima. The old town has a dense street pattern near the river, while newer development stretches along the highway and the roads to surrounding villages.
The town is the headquarters of Shirur taluka, an agricultural area that has changed rapidly with the growth of industry around Pune. The taluka includes Ranjangaon, home to one of the eight Ashtavinayaka Ganesh temples and to a major industrial estate. Sugarcane and other crops are grown on irrigated land in the surrounding countryside.
A Sirūr map poster follows the river as it winds past the town. The dense old lanes, the long straight line of the highway and the scattered roads of the countryside form a balanced composition. It is an honest portrait of a Deccan market town caught between its agricultural past and a growing industrial present.
The river winds past the town, its curves giving the map a natural focus and marking the side where the older streets are most closely packed.
The Pune–Ahmednagar road passes through Sirūr in a long, straight line, with newer shops, houses and businesses gathered along it as the town grows away from the river.
Flat farmland with irrigated plots and village roads surrounds the town, forming a quiet, open frame around the built-up area.
