Sittard lies in the south of Dutch Limburg, at a point where the Netherlands narrows to just a few kilometres between Belgium and Germany. The border runs close to town, and the map shows how quickly Dutch streets give way to German ones. The historic centre is compact, and parts of its old town walls still follow the edge of the core.
At the centre is the Markt, a wide square surrounded by old buildings, with short streets spreading out from it. The Geleenbeek stream runs nearby, and the land here is gently hilly, unlike the flat polders further north. Today Sittard forms one municipality with neighbouring Geleen.
