Slawi is the administrative seat of Tegal Regency in Central Java. It sits inland from the port city of Tegal, on the fertile plain that rises gradually southward toward the volcanic slopes of Mount Slamet. From above, the town is a fairly tight cluster of streets around a main junction, with roads leaving it in several directions across farmland.
Around the centre, small lanes and kampung neighbourhoods fill the spaces between the main roads, and beyond them the urban fabric thins quickly into paddy fields and villages. Slawi is best known across Indonesia for tea: several well-known bottled and packaged tea brands have been produced here, and the town is sometimes called a tea town.
