Sofifi is the capital of North Maluku province in eastern Indonesia, located on the west coast of Halmahera, the largest island in the province. It took over the role of capital from Ternate, which lies across the strait on its own volcanic island, and much of Sofifi has been developed for government since then.
From above, the town is a long, thin settlement following the coastline, with roads running parallel to the shore and newer government buildings set back on higher ground. The sea fills one side of the map, and across the water the small islands of Ternate and Tidore mark the horizon. Inland, forest and hills rise toward the interior of Halmahera.
