Ko e mape
Sorocaba lies about a hundred kilometres west of São Paulo, in hilly country cut by the Sorocaba River. The river crosses the city roughly from south to north, and many roads follow its banks or the valleys that feed into it. From above the city has a dense, fairly compact centre and wide rings of residential and industrial districts spreading over the surrounding ridges.
In colonial times Sorocaba was known for its livestock fairs, where mule trains driven up from southern Brazil were traded before continuing north. The city later became a textile centre and is now one of the larger industrial hubs in the state interior. It has also invested in cycling, and a network of bike lanes runs through many of its districts.
A Sorocaba map poster makes the river the main line of the drawing. Older streets in the centre form a tighter grid near the water, and newer neighbourhoods follow the curve of the hills in less regular patterns. Highways run along the edges, linking the city with the capital and with the rest of the interior.
The river runs through the city with roads along much of its banks. It forms the central axis of the map and separates districts on either side.
The old core near the river keeps a denser, more regular street grid, the remains of the town that grew from the mule-trading fairs.
Outer neighbourhoods follow the rolling terrain in curving streets and cul-de-sacs, giving the map's edges a softer, looser texture than the centre.
