South Benfleet is a town in southeast Essex, on the northern side of the Thames estuary. It rises from the edge of Benfleet Creek, a tidal channel that separates the mainland from Canvey Island. On the map, streets climb the higher ground away from the water, while the creek, marshes and flat island land fill the southern part of the frame.
The area has a long history. In 894, Danish Vikings were defeated at a fortified camp at Benfleet, an event recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Today South Benfleet is mostly residential, with a railway station on the line between London and Southend. Hadleigh Castle Country Park lies to the east, on the slopes above the marshes.
A South Benfleet map poster shows the meeting of land and estuary. Residential streets form a dense pattern on the slopes, the railway runs along the edge of the marshes, and the creek winds towards the Thames. The sharp line between built-up hillside and open wetland gives the print its character.

The line to London and Southend runs along the foot of the hill beside the creek, drawing a clear edge between town and estuary.
